What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation effects over 30 million people worldwide

and is one of the most common skin concerns for both men and women in the UK

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition caused by an increase of melanin which causes dark patches, brown spots and uneven skin tone. The most common examples of hyperpigmentation are freckles, sun spots, age spots, and even dark under-eye circles.

There are a number of culprits causing Hyperpigmentation – including: acne scarring and hormonal changes that often lead to melasma, but the biggest cause is the sun and UV exposure. Melanin works hard to keep UV rays at bay, but unprotected exposure to the sun and UV rays disrupt the natural production, and can lead to a build-up of darker skin cells.

Although hyperpigmentation is medically a harmless condition, we know at Newcastle Skin Clinic how the changes in your skin from over exposure to sun and UV rays can make you feel insecure about your skin – especially when makeup free!

Most people don’t realise that hyperpigmentation can be relatively easily treated, and is actually very easy to prevent! You may have seen Nurse Luisa’s personal pigmentation journey on our social media stories, so we asked our award-winning nurse Luisa, what she recommends and what she has been personally doing to erase it:
