New Covid advice

The Covid vaccine and injectable treatment advice

We’re so excited to finally be reopening our diary very soon. As well as our Covid protocols we have issued new precautions around having the vaccine and injectable treatments, as there has been a very small number of cases where patients have had some facial swelling when having the vaccine around the same time as having fillers.

These reactions are a delayed response to the vaccine that have been shown to be extremely rare and they are not solely linked to the COVID vaccine, but to anything which provokes an immune response in the body.

In the past, there have been cases of post treatment swelling linked also to viral and bacterial illness and even to dental procedures; it is not something new and nothing to be worried about.

As pointed out in this article on Aesthetic Medicine Magazine, “the reaction isn’t guaranteed to occur in everyone who has HA filler and receives the Moderna vaccine.”

Why are some people experiencing a reaction?

Think of a vaccine as a little alarm youre installing in your body to check your immune system and respond to anything that isn’t naturally there

Once injected, the body works to protect you from the virus and, in rare cases, it’s possible it can also be triggered by anything unusual to your body, such as a dermal filler. This can cause swelling around the area of the fillers, however this usually goes away on its own within a few days, or can easily be treated with medication like oral steroids or antihistamines

Luisa’s tips

Although there is limited evidence and only a very small number of cases, there is a small risk of inflammatory reactions and soft tissue swelling in patients who have previously had soft tissue fillers, or plan to have treatment, after receiving the COVID -19 vaccine.  If you are planning to get a filler, we suggest:

– Do not undergo soft tissue filler procedures within 2 weeks of your planned vaccination date or within 3 weeks after having received it.

– Do not attend for treatment if you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or are suffering from ongoing symptoms from previous infection.

– If you do develop any reactions following your treatment, it is imperative you contact your healthcare practitioner at the earliest opportunity.

– If you develop any reactions following your treatment, you may require medication to manage the complication. This may include oral steroid medication which could lower your immunity to if you have recently been vaccinated.
