If you’ve been looking into anti-ageing skincare, no doubt you have seen certain ingredients coming up on repeat, one of which being collagen. The reason for that? Collagen accounts for 75% of youthful skin, but collagen breaks down over time (as we age) and we naturally produce less collagen starting in our 20’s. Yet, collagen is the most important structural protein in our skin, responsible for giving us plump, youthful-looking skin – hence why it’s found in almost all anti-aging formulas.
Collagen occurs naturally in our bodies, but it can also be derived from plants and animals too. Collagen plays an important role in how your skin looks and feels and you can certainly apply collagen to the skin with collagen skincare in an attempt to replenish it, but Nurse Luisa explains “that doesn’t quite work, as simply put, the collagen molecule is very, very large, and way too big to penetrate the skin when used topically”.
Collagen is known for having great moisturising benefits when applied topically, so if your nightly routine consists of applying a collagen cream, it’s not a total loss as it may improve fine lines and wrinkles, but in reality, the collagen mostly moisturises it them to make them appear less visible in the short term. Luisa explains, “this can make the skin feel softer and smoother, but as far as actually building collagen? Not so much!”
